We’re open to foreigners, but the law’s the law, warns Cele

Police minister hints at the need for Ramaphosa to pass a bill to deal with SA’s illegal-immigrant headache

SA is “an African country in Africa”, police minister Bheki Cele said this week as he announced that 223 illegal immigrants were arrested on Durban’s beaches on New Year’s Eve.

But people need to abide by South African laws when crossing our borders, he added.

“On 31st December we arrested 223 illegal immigrants in two hours on the beach. No papers, information where they came from [sic] – nothing. One thing we did know was that they were completely undocumented,” he said at the festive season crime statistics briefing on Tuesday...
