Sandile Stangni, 21, was honoured as one of the top achieving matrics in KwaZulu-Natal – but unlike his peers, who took the stage in their heavily decorated school blazers, he accepted the award under heavy guard.

Stangni was announced as the top-performing matric prisoner in the province. He received four distinctions.

He is currently serving a three-year sentence at Durban’s Westville prison for armed robbery...
