‘Land grabbers’ can stay put thanks to council bungle

Latest attempt to remove people from hotly contested Sasolburg plot leaves municipality with a bloody nose


The Metsimaholo municipality in the Free State has been slapped with a a costly court order after trying to evict the thousands of residents from the Mooidraai farm in Sasolburg.

In 2013, the Zamdela residents hit the media spotlight after allegedly seizing the farm plot, egged on by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) who suggested they continue to occupy the space despite police trying to remove them.

In 2015 it was reported that the EFF had asked that the group of people continue to take control of the land, and that they should be free to build shacks regardless of police interference...
