Families hail arrest warrant for Joburg paediatric surgeon

Peter Beale and anaesthetist Abdulhay Munshi to answer charge of culpable homicide for 10-year-old boy’s death

Distraught parents, who for years fought to have prominent Johannesburg paediatric surgeon Peter Beale brought to justice, have welcomed a warrant for his arrest .

The warrant, which Times Select has seen, was issued by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. It was for the arrest of Beale and anaesthetist Abdulhay Munshi, who face a charge of culpable homicide.

The charge relates to the death of 10-year-old Zayyaan Sayed. He died in October in Netcare’s Park Lane Clinic just hours after he was operated on by Beale and Munshi. He had undergone a routine laparoscopic operation to stop reflux...
