Former president Jacob Zuma cannot meet his Monday deadline to respond to the state capture inquiry because he is in hospital in another country, according to a letter from his lawyers.

The letter by Zuma’s lawyers was sent to the Zondo commission of inquiry days before the Sunday World reported that the former head of state – who did not appear before the inquiry in November due to “ill-health” – has been admitted to hospital in Cuba because of “complications relating to poisoning”.

Asked whether President Cyril Ramaphosa was aware of this, his spokesperson, Khusela Diko, referred queries to Zuma’s spokesperson, who did not respond...
