University council is UP in arms over COO hiring process

Council member quits, saying the best candidate was overlooked on racial grounds. UP vehemently denies this

A member of the University of Pretoria’s council resigned in November amid accusations that the process to appoint a chief operating officer “was not honest or transparent”.

Russell Loubser, a former CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, said if the university intended not to appoint a white candidate, it needed to be brave enough to say so when it advertised the position – otherwise, the process is unfair.

After 10 years sitting on the UP council, Loubser detailed in a three-page letter his grievances resulting from a meeting he chaired to make the appointment...
