Everyone wants ‘a piece of state capture’, but few pay the price

Hundreds of bidders at an auction of assets belonging to the late Gavin Watson’s African Global Operations (formerly Bosasa) left empty-handed, saying the media hype around Wednesday’s event had pushed prices up.

A car dealer, who only introduced himself as Johan, said he felt let down after not being able to bid on any of the vehicles at the auction in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg.

“The prices are very expensive, and the media hype has ruined this for us people who survive on auctions ... I’m not coming to this joke again,” he said...
