Pupils around SA are ditching school after their final paper, but one school had a fresh, and productive, idea


Parktown High School for Girls in Johannesburg has devised an innovative way of keeping its pupils busy after they finish writing their final exams: getting them to do 20 hours of community service.

While pupils countrywide have been sitting idle at home or going to the mall after writing their last paper, the Grades 8-11 girls from Parktown have been working at the Johannesburg Zoo, children’s homes, old-age homes and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Although they were obliged to remain at school until today, December 4, when schools officially closed for the Christmas holidays, headmistress Tracey Megom said it was not practical to keep them on the property “because we still have to mark papers and compile reports”...
