Stellar flare suggests exotic new star system has been discovered

In astronomy patience is a virtue: wading through Big Data produced by radio telescopes sometimes means waiting months or even years before an unusual sighting occurs.

But for a group of scientists using the world-renowned MeerKAT radio telescope in the Karoo, gazing at a part of the sky near the Southern Constellation of Ara, it took only two months before a whole new discovery was made – but like most things astronomical, it began with them first simply noticing something strange.

The radio emission of a particular object brightened by a factor of three over the course of three weeks.  ..
