Following years of witnessing her mother being physically and emotionally abused by her father, at the age of 14 Amanda was diagnosed as having depressive episodes.

By 22 not only was she clinically depressed, a condition that was exacerbated by her having a baby, but she faced a double whammy as she also found out while pregnant that she was HIV-positive.
