Itch to twitch: birding takes off with teens

Bird watching has transformed the lives of pupils from Khayelitsha and Langa, who will be out in force on Saturday for Birding Big Day (https://www.birdlife.org.za/support-us/events/birding-big-day-2019/), when birders record as many species as they can in 24 hours in a 50km radius.

Birdlife SA, which organises the national competition, bestowed Owl Awards on Claremont High School (https://claremonthigh.co.za/) maths teacher Khanyisane Falake and former colleague Garth Shaw in 2019 for their contribution to conservation through the school’s Bird Club.

“When I spotted my 100th bird my excitement really began,” said 15-year-old Buhle Qwesha from Nyanga, a keen member of the club. “I learnt to be patient, and quiet.”..
