Bird watching has transformed the lives of pupils from Khayelitsha and Langa, who will be out in force on Saturday for Birding Big Day (, when birders record as many species as they can in 24 hours in a 50km radius.

Birdlife SA, which organises the national competition, bestowed Owl Awards on Claremont High School ( maths teacher Khanyisane Falake and former colleague Garth Shaw in 2019 for their contribution to conservation through the school’s Bird Club.

“When I spotted my 100th bird my excitement really began,” said 15-year-old Buhle Qwesha from Nyanga, a keen member of the club. “I learnt to be patient, and quiet.”..
