Mashaba’s inner-city Joburg revamp ‘is anti-poor’

A mere kilometre from where outgoing Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba’s bold plan to revive the crumbling  inner city is set to unfold, Nontombi Mchunu, 31, sits outside a tattered tent.

She had been living at the makeshift tent camp at Wembley stadium in Turffontein for the past two years, after a fire broke out at the hijacked building in the inner city where she was renting.

Sharing the camp are eight families staying in tents, 50 in containers and 28 occupying the dilapidated building on the premises...
