Homeless lose R500m case as smug courtroom remark adds insult

Dozens of Durban’s homeless hung their heads in dismay when they heard that a landmark case, which would have seen a group representing them awarded R500m, was unsuccessful against the eThekwini municipality.

The Ark Christian Ministries on Monday failed in its high court bid to sue the city in a landmark case for more than R500m, and in doing so doused the hopes of hundreds of Durban’s homeless for a better life.

The Ark alleged that the city had failed to find alternative accommodation for its church and shelter after they were initially evicted from their premises 15 years ago...
