Cape varsity gets caught up in student council’s factional fight

Sasco says CPUT intends to exclude its members from the SRC in favour of candidates it has suspended

The SA Students Congress (Sasco) has launched an urgent court bid to interdict the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) from establishing a student representative council that excludes its preferred candidates.

Sasco’s Western Cape secretary Siyabonga Booysen, in papers before the Cape High Court, said the organisation had heard rumours last week that CPUT intended to exclude its members, Sikhulile Mpetsheni, Siseko Yolwa and Neliseka Mehlomakhulu, from the SRC.

Booysen said three other Sasco candidates, Nanga Codana, Sibulele Twashu and Phinda Swaartbooi, were allowed into the venue where the new SRC was being constituted. Sasco had won three seats on the SRC during elections in October...
