State hauls Joburg land-grab ‘masterminds’ to court

Shack developers selling off government land amid burgeoning settlements around southern suburbs


The alleged masterminds behind a spree of land grabs in Ennerdale, Lawley and Lenasia South have been hauled to court by the Gauteng department of human settlements, which is determined to protect state turf from invasion by shack dwellers.

In July, the region in southern Johannesburg was on a knife edge as shack dwellers and home owners clashed after the latter took the law into their own hands and started demolishing shanties.

Four people were wounded, and the area was placed on lockdown by police...
