Huge Vaal sewage spill to continue due to repair delays

Army’s departure and hiring of new company creates security gap as 130 million litres gush into the river daily

The SA National Defence Force is in the process of pulling out of the Vaal River rehabilitation project, but a new security company to guard the treatment plants is yet to be appointed.

The department of water and sanitation (DWS) has already handed over the job of fixing broken sewage works on the country’s third-biggest river to bulk waste water management company Erwat.

But Erwat says it was only appointed at the end of September and will only be able to start operations to fix the works in December once a full staff complement has been deployed to the site...
