State departments, SOEs give auditor-general a huge debt headache
Kimi Makwetu’s office has a mountain to climb to recover R744m in unpaid audit fees, some dating to 2016
Auditor-general Kimi Makwetu has raised concern over the continuous increase of unpaid debt by state-owned enterprises (SOEs), with R173m still outstanding from the past financial year.
“Collecting outstanding debt predominantly from local government and SOEs remains a challenge. We envisage that this trend may increase, given the number of bailouts across the spectrum of critical service providers,” Makwetu said.
His office has already spent more than R4m in legal fees to recoup more than R160m in unpaid audit fees by government departments, entities and municipalities...
