Ugly DA squabbles bubble to surface as key national meeting looms

The provincial leader has to intervene in Cape Town councillors’ factional spat

The turmoil in the DA is not limited to the party’s top echelons – a similar war is manifesting itself in the party’s Cape Town structures, with members tabling motions of no confidence against each other.

Western Cape leader Bonginkosi Madikizela had to intervene on Monday morning and stop DA councillors in the City of Cape Town from voting in a motion of no confidence against mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith from his position as the deputy caucus leader.

This would have been a second such motion in as many weeks against a senior DA leader in the region. Only last weekend, Grant Twigg, the DA leader in Cape Town, survived a motion to remove him from this position. The motion was brought by two DA senior councillors, who are allegedly part of the so-called “classic liberals” grouping that is fighting against the direction the party is taking under Mmusi Maimane’s leadership...
