Walus rot on in jail? ‘A judge, not a minister, should decide’

Hani killer’s lawyer has asked a judge not to send parole decision back to the justice minister

It is now up to Pretoria high court judge Jody Kollapen to decide if Chris Hani’s killer should get parole.

Kollapen on Monday reserved judgment in the application brought by Janusz Walus to set aside former justice minister Michael Masutha’s decision in January to refuse him parole for the murder of the SA Communist Party general secretary in April 1993.  

The former uMkhonto weSizwe member was shot dead as he stepped out of his car outside his house in Boksburg, on Johannesburg’s East Rand, a year before the first democratic elections, an assassination many at the time feared would spark a civil war. ..
