No work, big pay: State ‘spent R5m on Mdluli clan’
They were hired at great cost but spent a lot of time shopping instead of in the office, Zondo inquiry hears
The state capture inquiry has heard how former Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli allegedly abused his position to appoint several family members and rent out properties owned by him as safe houses for intelligence operations.
Salaries and other expenses for Mdluli’s seven family members are said to have cost the state about R5m, even while some of them spent work hours shopping and visiting family members in other provinces.
Aside from appointing family to senior positions, Mdluli also allegedly pocketed up to R7,000 per month by renting out his Western Cape property as a safe house to the division he headed...
