My body, my choice, my art, so no more painting with the shame brush

As SA women’s right to abortion comes ever more under threat, these artists are highlighting the issue

Voices and Choices, the multimedia art exhibition that opened on Constitution Hill in Johannesburg this weekend, makes a powerful visual statement about how SA’s women, despite our legally protected rights, are still subjected to the archaic conservatism and patriarchy that render women voiceless and choiceless – and, all too often, lifeless – because of a lack of access to safe abortion facilities.

Many of the works are a moving reminder of why women turn to unsafe methods of abortion. Underlying all the art is a strong affirmation of every woman’s right to make informed decisions about her body and health.

The exhibition, curated by Mmabatho Montsho, features artists including Thandiwe Msebenzi, Lady Skollie, Jess Holdengarde, Sitaara Stodel, Honey Makwakwa, Neo Mahlangu, Nadine Cloete and Boipelo Khunou...
