Environmentalists don’t give a frack about this Rhino

Frackers are seeking permission to explore a huge swathe of SA, but activists aren’t taking it lying down

This was the reaction from antifracking activists after controversial mining company Rhino Oil and Gas Exploration SA withdrew its application to explore large stretches of the KwaZulu-Natal midlands for oil, coalbed methane gas, liquid gas and helium – and then at almost the exact same time applied for the rights to explore 4,268 farms in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

The proposed exploration is done through aerial survey and “desktop” work, and does not require fracking, water use or access to the land and farms explored. However, many have claimed these studies are a mere precursor to eventual fracking...
