ERs are where the HIV epidemic may go to die

New research suggests emergency departments could be a key battlefield in the fight against HIV

Emergency departments could be one of the keys to beating HIV, say researchers who tested nearly 3,000 patients at Eastern Cape hospitals.

The key reason is that young men – the population group considered to be the drivers of SA’s HIV epidemic – turn up in emergency departments more often than in other clinical settings.

And after spending a year working in three emergency departments, the researchers found male patients were twice as likely as women to be unaware of their HIV status...
