The embrace between Nolubabalo “Babsie” Nobanda, 31, and members of her family seemed to go on forever, but nobody in the arrivals hall at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo airport begrudged them that.

For some members of her family it had been eight years since they last saw her, after she was caught in Thailand with 650g of cocaine woven into her dreadlocks.

The woman who emerged through the international arrivals gate was a far cry from the images relayed around the world in 2011...
