A gay man who fled to SA at the height of state-sanctioned persecution of homosexuals in Uganda has scored a legal victory against home affairs.

Despite well-documented official homophobia in the East African country, Arafat Mwereri, 37, has been struggling to obtain refugee status since 2012.

Eventually, he sued the chair of the refugee appeal board and the home affairs minister in the High Court in Cape Town, which has ordered the board to give him a new hearing...
