Gauteng fails to recoup money from fleeing contractors
Millions have been spent on 14 infrastructure development projects, with very little to show for it
The Gauteng government has failed to recoup any of the money it had paid to contractors who had either abandoned the building sites or whose services were terminated for poor workmanship.
Gauteng MEC for instrastructure development and property management, Tasneem Motara, admitted on Tuesday that her department had already spent some of the R620m budgeted for the construction of six health facilities and eight schools. None of these projects were completed.
“Some of the contracts were terminated by us due to poor workmanship ... some were abandoned by contractors who were prevented to do the work by communities ... We are currently in a process to see if we can blacklist some of these companies,” Motara said...
