Hlaudi ‘was less trouble, more troubleshooter’

Ngubane admits SABC knew Motsoeneng did not have a matric certificate, but it did not matter

Ex-SABC board chairperson Ben Ngubane had a lot to answer for at the state capture inquiry on Monday: the rise of Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the controversial New Age business breakfasts, and his links to the Gupta family.

But Ngubane took the questions around these matters in his stride, often blaming his predecessors and the public broadcaster’s executive team.

On Motsoeneng’s meteoric rise through the SABC’s ranks in 2012, Ngubane said he was a “troubleshooter” who had the skills the broadcaster needed at the time. This was despite him not having the right qualifications – Motsoeneng has a Grade 10 education – to meet the requirements for an executive position...
