Nowhere to rest in peace: burial space is now rare real estate

Municipalities such as eThekwini have been hit by a shortage of places to lay the dead to rest

A cemetery on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast is up for sale – minus any corpses.

The 283-hectare plot inland from Scottburgh and Umzinto – which offers half a million approved graves, of which 300,000 are ready to be used immediately – recently went under the hammer. However, the seller rejected the offer. 

The plot is being offered as a solution to the burial-space crisis in some SA cities, where high-rise cemeteries, sea burials and coffin stacking have been considered as possible solutions. ..
