News managers testify how Motsoeneng bent the rules, overstepped his mandate and expunged those who disobeyed

Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s iron-fist rule over the SABC came under scrutiny at the state capture inquiry on Thursday when two news managers testified how he bent the rules, overstepped his mandate and expunged anybody who disobeyed him. 

While he was chief operations officer back in 2014, Motsoeneng redirected responsibilities of the editor-in-chief to his office, giving him overarching authority over the news environment at the public broadcaster.

Thereafter, he implemented a controversial policy to ban all broadcasting of violent protests in a bid to protect the ANC’s image ahead of the national elections. What followed was a purge of any news manager who failed to comply...
