‘Revolutionary’ bone implants mean no more metal pins

Magnesium implants are absorbed into the body so no second operation is needed to remove them


Some state hospitals in SA have started using a dissolvable implant instead of metal pins to help broken bone fragments grow back.

This means no second operation is required to remove the metal pins because the magnesium implant gets absorbed into the body. The magnesium also helps prevent bone infections, while the surgery is less painful and has a shorter healing time. 

The implants were invented by Prof Utz Claassen, from Germany, who won the German Innovation Award for it and presented the product in Johannesburg on Wednesday...
