Hostage negotiators charged with ensuring the safe return of snatched Vanderbijlpark schoolgirl Amy’Leigh de Jager would have spent hours on an emotional tightrope, second-guessing their decisions as her life hung in the balance.  

Their unseen brinkmanship played out in a nondescript office at the Vanderbijlpark police station in the hours after her abduction on Monday, and played a critical role in the police response to the chilling crime.
