Emigration nation: web tool is plotting the SA brain drain

A pokey website built as a part-time project may provide key insight into where SA expats land up

While it’s no secret that South Africans are leaving in droves in search of greener pastures elsewhere in the world, one man’s self-built website is plotting the exodus.

Bernhard Smuts, a pilot and software developer, said his project – wheredidwego.com (https://www.wheredidwego.com/) – was a visual representation of emigration over three decades.

“I was scrolling through my Facebook timeline and noticed that the number of posts about emigration sales began superseding everything else. I decided to count how many of my friends have moved overseas. It shocked me a little to realise I needed more than just one hand.
