“Imagine Africa without giraffes. There is a rapid, silent extinction happening in front of our eyes, which will be irreversible,” said rangelands habitat expert Francois Deacon, from the University of the Free State (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Francois_Deacon).

“The number of giraffes on the continent has plummeted 40% in the past three decades, to between 90,000 and 100,000.”

SA, where some 30,000 Cape giraffes thrive, is the exception to the decline, precipitated by the loss of trees and poaching for bushmeat...
