Nit-picking municipality turfs elderly out of loved care centre

The Scottburgh facility, which opened its doors to seniors in 1984, faces closure thanks to new municipal policy

For more than 30 years, a senior citizens’ care centre in Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast offered caregivers and a three-course meal twice a week, provided medical equipment for hire and helped hundreds of lonely pensioners socialise.

Now, the Ilala Care Centre may have to shut down because the Umdoni Municipality refuses to renew its lease. 

Ilala chairperson Mary Eckley told Times Select the lease expired on August 31. ..
