No money to stock schools’ libraries and labs

Only a third of pupils in Mpumalanga received textbooks in 2017/18


Mpumalanga’s education department has not bought charts, dictionaries and readers for pupils in grades 4-9 in the last five years because of budgetary constraints.

Only 31.26% of pupils in the province had received textbooks in 2017/18, but the department cannot quantify the exact number because it has no IT system to keep these records.

Perhaps even worse, the department has no money to provide library books for newly-built libraries that require a “full supply” of books. Nor does it have the finances to fully equip newly-built laboratories...
