It’s personal. It’s not about her alone, it’s about all of us. An attack on her is an attack on us.

As dramatic as this may sound, this is how Twitter users – the majority of them South African – felt about the “attack” on star 800m athlete Caster Semenya, who has effectively been banned from competing at international events because of her testosterone levels.

An analysis of close to 40,000 tweets shows that, for most users, it was a battle of “them” versus “us”...
