Suburb blows fuse as students ‘turn it into slum’

Westdene-Sophiatown locals say they worry about property value, but a town planner thinks this is an overreaction


Westdene and Sophiatown residents in Johannesburg are infuriated by the mushrooming of student accommodation close to their properties, claiming the students are turning their suburb into a shantytown.

“It’s slums everywhere. In a way, this will depreciate the value of our properties. In fact, a lot of people in the streets are leaving the area; some are abandoning their houses as they can’t sell. It’s terrible,” said resident Nicolas Rosenblum, a retired jeweller.
