Back in the 1980s there was a curious journalistic “knighting” ceremony in the newsroom of a Durban daily paper.
Sometime around early May or June each year, the then news editor would cast his eyes around the newsroom to pick out a newbie reporter (and on occasion an older hack who appeared to be idle).
