They cost R1.2m, they fight terrorism – and they’re doggone cute too!

These dogs may be expensive, but their ability to sniff out the smallest trace of explosive makes them worth every cent

As Fred makes his way through OR Tambo International Airport, he has no idea that he’s about to track down a young woman carrying explosives through the terminal.

All he knows is that the smell that was imprinted on him when he was an adolescent is in the air, and he freaking loves it. If he can find the source of that gunpowder smell, he knows his handler is going to give him the thing his canine heart truly desires: a ball!

As he sniffs around the massive hall filled with people, he’s picking up the thermal plume produced by a body’s natural heat and scent, and he begins to pull – hard – on his handler’s leash. He’s worked out where the smell is coming from, and approaches a young, blonde woman wearing a black pouch on her leg...
