‘Highway rapist’ victims left in limbo as magistrate calls in sick

The 30 women now have to wait for over a month before they can hear the fate of the man who brutalised them

A group of 30 women who have been left scarred by a man dubbed the “Durban highway rapist”, whose reign of terror spanned three years, are yet to see justice. 

The sentencing of Moses Mavila, 29, was expected to commence at the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday but was postponed because magistrate Bilkish Asmal was sick. 

Mavila had previously pleaded guilty to 61 charges related to assault and robbery and 30 counts pertaining to rape. ..
