It’s full colours for Athol Williams, but a fail for the rainbow nation

Meet the poet and ethicist with qualifications from some of the world’s best universities

When Athol Willams is not teaching business ethics at the University of Cape Town, he is writing a book or a poem, running a literacy organisation, or bagging qualifications from the world’s most prestigious universities.

The Cape Flats-born award-winning poet recently graduated from UK-based Oxford University with a PhD in political philosophy, another feather in his academic cap that has also seen him attain five master’s degrees from five of the world’s top universities.

But his success has not been smooth sailing. Starting out his academic career with a degree in mechanical engineering at the Witwatersrand University in the late 1980s, he spent many a day applying for international scholarships that would still see him scavenge for food...
