Law on lead paints hopeful picture for SA children

Draft legislation is in the works to have the amount of lead in industrial paint reduced

For the past four years Medical Research Council director Angela Mathee has been a consistent voice for an integrated approach to lead exposure reduction in SA.

Legislation would mean a law on how much lead – which can cause low IQ and brain damage – in blood is safe, checking levels in children’s blood in high-risk areas, and awareness campaigns.

She hasn’t been fully heard yet, but hope is starting to form...
