A prison soccer team have won 25 of their 29 matches and turned into instant local celebrities
They beat the police (twice) and the home defenders, but there was no escape for Overberg’s soccer team of convicts when they came up against the Young Pirates of Heideveld in Cape Town.
A 10-1 drubbing in the Western Cape playoffs in Beaufort West in June ended an unlikely dream run for the prison team from Caledon, Helderstroom FC, who achieved celebrity status in their hometown last month when they won their regional league by 10 points.
