The mean age of people affected by the ‘silent killer’ has gotten younger in recent years, a Cape study has found

High blood pressure is rocketing among the community of Bellville South in Cape Town. 

Two studies conducted seven years apart in Bellville South, a predominantly coloured area, found what researchers called a “significant” increase in a condition dubbed a “silent killer”.

Now doctors have called for a “concerted drive” to boost blood-pressure screening, pointing to obesity, diabetes and alcohol consumption as major factors fuelling the health scare...
