Hundreds of immigrant kids are being turfed out by principals. Now an NGO is taking up their case in court

While his peers at Cromati Combined School in Komatipoort – close to the border with Mozambique – returned to school on Monday after the June holidays, Afoso Maluleke will spend his time making a toy car out of wire.

The 11-year-old, who passed Grade 3 in 2018, has not returned to school this year because he does not have a birth certificate.

Maluleke and 138 other undocumented pupils from Cromati Combined, who have missed out on six months of schooling so far, are among hundreds of so-called illegal “foreign” or non-national children born in SA who are not receiving an education...
