Fish kept in decorative home aquariums do not often make waves, but the sale of “tattooed” pet fish in SA has caused gasps of outrage.

The Ban Animal Trading organisation recently held a protest outside Northlands Pets in Springfield, Durban, after three yellow parrot fish emblazoned with the symbols for “I love you” were sold for R400 apiece.

This sparked a stormy reaction on social media about the cruelty involved in taking fish out of water to make them more attractive...
