It was their fault that I beat them, says serial rapist

The Randfontein attacker has admitted he committed the crimes, but he blames the women, and drugs


For four months, Randfontein women trying to make a living, or even just trying to catch a train, fell victim to serial rapist Bongani Mashego, who used their situation to his advantage and lured them to isolated areas.

But if it wasn’t for his final victim, who fought back and injured him so badly that he was forced to flee and seek medical treatment, he could still be raping, beating, strangling and robbing the residents of Randfontein.

At the end of May, Mashego finally signed a plea statement where he admitted to his series of crimes, detailing each of the incidents where he left four women battered, traumatised and violated. Submitted to the High Court sitting at Palm Ridge, the man pleaded guilty to four counts of rape, four of attempted murder, two of robbery, and one of attempted rape, although he was unwilling to strike a sentence deal with the state, instead opting to try and defend his actions, and explain why the court should deviate from the minimum life sentence he currently faces...
