Let’s make Panama old hat: SA needs more ships

Only five vessels on the local register so far, but tax laws have eased and there are more ships on the horizon

SA is better known for its safaris than its ships, despite a coastline of more than 3,000km.

But this is fast changing, thanks to a push to bolster the country’s ship register, which as of this week has five ships to its name, with several more on the horizon. 

If all goes according to script, SA will carry 40% of its cargo on SA-flagged ships by 2030, more than 100 million tons. ..
