New Kirstenbosch curator returns to his roots

Werner Voigt's heart has always been in the botanical garden, now he's finally 'home again'

When Werner Voigt was a schoolboy his head wasn’t in the clouds – it was in the dirt.

The new curator of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town would climb over fences to escape to the outdoors, where he cultivated his love of the environment.

“I remember stopping and sitting in this field, making little necklaces with yellow daisies for my mother,” he said. “From then, I knew I was going to do something in the natural sciences.”..
