‘We want to teach, not look after criminals’

Teachers fear for their lives while schools' codes of conduct are useless against drug dealers and gangsters


Teachers are not trained to discipline criminals, be criminologists or play the role of a Correctional Services officer.

So says Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie (SAOU) CEO Chris Klopper after their recent study that 87% of respondents spent too much time on recording and reporting unruly pupils’ behaviour.

At least 75% of the 3,000 participants, who are members of the union, said their school’s code of conduct was not effective in maintaining discipline while 70% said they had not been trained to deal with violent pupils...
